Where to stay, wander and linger
Tallinn is compact enough to explore on foot, yet layered enough to reward a slower itinerary. Begin inside the Old Town walls, where Town Hall Square, St Catherine’s Passage and Pikk Street trace the city’s Hanseatic past. Toompea adds viewpoints, churches and a more elevated sense of the skyline.
For a contemporary counterpoint, head toward Telliskivi Creative City and Kalamaja. Former industrial buildings now hold studios, restaurants, design shops and cultural venues. The seafront district around Noblessner offers modern architecture, galleries and sunset walks, while Kadriorg is the gentler choice for parks, museums and grand villas.
Three useful bases
- Old Town: best for first-time visitors, historic atmosphere and evening walks.
- City centre: best for transport links, business travel and skyline hotels.
- Kalamaja: best for creative energy, cafés and a neighbourhood feel.
A graceful long weekend
Allow one day for the Old Town and Toompea, one for Telliskivi and the waterfront, and a third for Kadriorg or a coastal excursion. Reserve time for a sauna or spa ritual: Tallinn’s climate makes restorative indoor culture part of the destination rather than an afterthought.
Restaurants, opening hours and transport schedules change, so verify details with each venue or Tallinn’s official tourism resources before travelling.
